Escape to Paradise: Your Dream Holiday Awaits in Baarlo, Netherlands!
Escape to Paradise: Baarlo, Netherlands - Or, Did I Really Escape? (A Rambling Review)
Alright, so I'm back from this place – Escape to Paradise in Baarlo, Netherlands. Sounds idyllic, right? Well, let’s just say my escape was less "paradise found" and more "slightly-stressful-but-still-pretty-good-with-a-few-hiccups-and-a-whole-lot-of-sauna." Buckle up, because this review’s gonna be a wild ride (just like trying to navigate Dutch traffic on a bike, which, ahem, I did not).

First Impressions (and a Near Disaster with the Luggage Trolley)
The website promised paradise. Reality? …Well, the entrance was pretty slick. Modern, clean lines, lots of glass. But getting my luggage in? Now that was an adventure. The entrance area, mind you, looked accessible, but the slightly uneven cobblestones… let’s just say I nearly took a header. Luckily, the doorman, bless his heart, saw my flailing and swooped in. (Good first impression, but maybe a little ramp or something, guys?). They’ve got a lovely Elevator though, so that’s a definite win for Accessibility.
Rooms: Ah, The Sweetest Sound Was of the Blackout Curtains…
My room? Pretty swanky, I gotta admit. The Air conditioning actually worked (a huge plus in summer). They had the standard Air Conditioning, Alarm Clock, Bathrobes (thank heavens), and even Bathrobes. But the real MVP? The Blackout Curtains. I slept like a log! The Bed was, and the included Extra long bed made my 6'3" frame a happy camper! The Complimentary tea and the Coffee/tea maker were a lifesaver for those jet-lagged mornings. Really enjoyed the Coffee/tea maker as well, as I can't function without my morning cup. The In-room safe box was a nice touch, although I'm not sure who in Baarlo would try to steal my…travel toothbrush? The Bathroom was spacious and clean, with a Linens and Mirror. Loved the Slippers! The Shower was one of those fantastic rain ones. I could stand in there for hours! And I did.
There was a desk, which came in handy, and yes, there’s even a Laptop workspace. (If you're into that sort of thing while on holiday. I, personally, am not). You could also request an Interconnecting room(s) available, which is useful if you are traveling as a family.
The Internet, The LAN, and The Wi-Fi…Oh My!
Okay, let's talk internet. Because, you know, even in paradise (supposedly), we need our digital fix. The good news? Free Wi-Fi in the rooms! Hallelujah! The Internet was mostly reliable, although there were a few moments where my emails mysteriously vanished into the ether. They also had Internet access – wireless, and to top it off Internet access – LAN! (For those of you who are genuinely tech wizards, and are using it for business). So, points for options.
Things To Do: Spa Day, Anyone? (My Version of Relaxation)
This is where Escape to Paradise really leaned into its name. The Spa/sauna area? Stunning. Seriously. The Pool with view was breathtaking. I could easily spend a week there. The Swimming pool [outdoor] made it even better. I spent an entire day floating in the Swimming pool with a drink (from the Poolside bar) in my hand and a book (I finished!). Bliss.
The Sauna options were legit. Seriously, I felt like a new person after a session. And the Steamroom was… well, steamy. Very steamy. The Fitness center (which I bravely entered… once) was well-equipped. Honestly, though, my idea of working out is walking around the Spa/sauna area. They had a Gym/fitness area too! Oh, and did I mention they offered a Body scrub and Body wrap? Sadly, I didn't try those. But I did get a Massage. And that was fantastic. I may have snuck in a nap during it. Shhh…
Food Glorious Food (Or, My Attempts at Being a Foodie)
The dining options were plentiful at Escape to Paradise. You could choose from:
- A la carte in restaurant - Nice!
- Asian cuisine in restaurant - Good choice.
- Breakfast [buffet] - They had it and it was good.
- Buffet in restaurant - Lots of variety.
- Coffee/tea in restaurant - Standard!
- Desserts in restaurant - Delicious!
- International cuisine in restaurant - Always a plus when on holiday.
- Restaurants - Good options.
- Salad in restaurant - Healthy!
- Soup in restaurant - Great!
- Vegetarian restaurant - Good for those that require it.
- Western breakfast - Standard!
- Western cuisine in restaurant - Always a good bet.
The Happy hour was well-timed, and the Poolside bar was a winner. The Breakfast service was… decent. They had a good Breakfast [buffet] but it wasn't life-changing. The Coffee shop was great for a quick caffeine hit. And, for those lazy days, the Room service [24-hour] was a lifesaver. It was also nice to have a Bar to enjoy in the evenings.
Safety and Cleanliness: Did They Actually Sanitize Everything?
I'm a bit of a germaphobe, so I was paying close attention to the Cleanliness and safety. They had a lot of measures in place, including Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, and Hand sanitizer everywhere. There were Fire extinguisher, Smoke alarms, and a Front desk [24-hour], which made me feel pretty secure. They also had Staff trained in safety protocol and Rooms sanitized between stays. Plus, the Cashless payment service felt reassuring.
Accessibility, Accessibility, Accessibility…
This is where things get a little complicated. Overall, Escape to Paradise tries to be accessible, which is commendable. The Facilities for disabled guests are definitely there. They do have an Elevator and Wheelchair accessible features in some areas. The Car park [free of charge] was close to the entrance. However, the uneven cobblestones mentioned earlier, and some narrow walkways (especially near the spa), did make me wonder if they’d truly tested it out with all types of guests. The On-site accessible restaurants / lounges were definitely a plus, though.
Services and Conveniences: The Little Things (and a Near Meltdown at the Gift Shop)
They offer a ton of services. The Concierge was helpful with advice on local sights. The Daily housekeeping kept everything sparkling. They had Cash withdrawal. The Luggage storage was useful. The Laundry service was a lifesaver after a particularly muddy bike ride (yup, I tried that Dutch biking thing). They even had a Gift/souvenir shop. I… well, let’s just say I might have had a small meltdown trying to decide on a souvenir. I ended up buying a clog-shaped key-chain. Don't judge.
Additional Services and conveniences included:
- Air conditioning in public area - Standard!

Okay, here we go! My attempt at a hilariously messy, opinionated, and deeply human travel itinerary for a little holiday in the Netherlands, specifically at that Charming Holiday Home in Baarlo with Terrace Peel en Maas. Buckle up, buttercups, because this is gonna be less "perfectly planned" and more "winging it with a healthy dose of existential dread and the occasional cheese craving."
The Baarlo Bungler's Guide to a Dutch Delight (Or Disaster, Who Knows?)
Day 1: Arrival & "Where's the Beer?"
10:00 AM (ish) - Departure (and a frantic scramble for my passport): Brussels airport. Honestly, getting to the airport was a comedy of errors. You’d think after all these years I’d remember to actually check if my passport is still valid. Cue a panicked search through every drawer, under the couch, and, yes, even the freezer (don't ask). Found it. Barely made the flight. This is already not going well. I'm already judging the other travelers.
12:00 PM (ish) - Arrival in Eindhoven & Rental Car Chaos: Okay, so I booked a "compact" car. What I got was a sardine can on wheels. I'm pretty sure the guy at the rental place was laughing at me. Driving on the opposite side is always an adventure, especially when you're convinced every roundabout is a personal attack.
2:00 PM - Baarlo Bound! (And Lost): Found some questionable "directions" online. Google Maps, I curse your name! Swerved away, and I missed my own turn. Ended up in some town staring longingly at a windmill, wishing I spoke Dutch.
3:00 PM - HOLIDAY HOME HOORAY! (Eventually): Finally! The Charming Holiday Home. It is cute. The terrace? Looks promising. I can see myself sitting out there, contemplating the meaning of life with a glass of wine… or maybe just a beer. (Priorities, people.)
- Messy Interior Rant: Everything looks so perfect in the photos online yet I'm already starting to think cleaning service never came to the property.
4:00 PM - Beer Hunting Expeditions: The fridge is empty. This is a crisis. Launched a desperate search for a local shop. Found one! But a tiny shop, which would take a while to get what I want
5:00 PM - Terrace Time (Take One, With Minor Existential Crisis): Settled onto the terrace with my hard-earned beer. The birds are chirping. The sun is shining. I am, inexplicably, questioning all my life choices. Did I pack enough snacks? Did I remember to water the plants back home? Is it even possible to truly be happy on holiday? The beer is good, though. Very good.
7:00 PM - Dinner Disaster (Or Delight?): Attempted to cook something. Burnt the garlic. Over-salted the pasta. Ended up ordering pizza. The pizza was surprisingly good. Pizza. The great leveler.
9:00 PM - Nighttime Terrance Chill: Thinking about going to bed. But the evening is pretty beautiful from the terrace and also there is a weird spider. I'm going to sleep
Day 2: Cycling, Cheese, and a Side of Self-Doubt
8:00 AM (ish) - Breakfast of Champions (And Regret) - Managed to not set the toast on fire. Victory! Decided against my better judgement to check out the local bakery. My god, it smelled amazing. Bought way too many pastries. Will probably regret this later.
9:30 AM- Cycling Catastrophe: "Let's rent bikes!" I thought. "It'll be fun!" Famous last words. Dutch bike paths? Brilliant. My sense of direction? Non-existent. Barely escaped colliding with a gaggle of geese. Nearly ended up in a ditch. My cycling skills seem to have regressed to the age of five.
11:00 AM - Cheese Shop Serenity (And Glorious Overeating): Found a cheese shop! It was a revelation. The smell of aging dairy filled my nostrils like ambrosia. Sampled everything. Bought way too much cheese. No regrets. None. Cheese is my love language.
1:00 PM - Lunch (Cheese Extravaganza) - Back to the holiday home, cheese, crackers, and a view of the terrace.
2:00 PM - Boat Trip - Attempted. Turns out, you have to book these things. Missed it this time, but I'm planning for tomorrow.
3:00 PM - Village Stroll (And Philosophical Musings): Wandered through Baarlo. It's charming, yes, but also… quiet. Too quiet. Started thinking about my life again. Am I living it right? Should I have chosen a different career path? Do pigeons secretly judge us? Decided to stop thinking, had coffee and ice cream, and that helped.
6:00 PM - Dinner & The Great Netflix Debate: Debated between cooking (again, probably a disaster) and eating leftovers. Settled on leftovers. But then…Netflix. The eternal struggle of what to watch. Ended up watching something I didn’t even want to watch. Typical.
8:00 PM - Terrace, Attempt Two (And Spider's Return!): Back on the terrace. The spider is still there. I'm slowly learning to coexist. More beer. More existentialism.
Day 3: Water Fun! (And Possibly More Cognitive Dissonance)
9:00 AM - Breakfast of Excess (Plus Coffee Overload): The leftovers from yesterday's bakery run are calling my name. Also, three cups of coffee. I'm jittery but ready to face whatever comes my way.
10:00 AM - Boat Trip: Redemption!: Booked a boat trip. Hoping for sunshine and good vibes. The water is pretty. The scenery is lovely. Briefly considered becoming a sailor. Then I remembered I get seasick.
12:00 PM - Picnic (Sponsored by Cheese and Regret): The boat trip provides us with a picnic.
2:00 PM- Leisurely afternoon: A great place to chill, relax, and be happy.
6:00 PM - Goodbye Dinner & Packing (The Real Downer): Saying goodbye to the terrace is hard. But, I'm going back home tomorrow. Still weird.
8:00 PM - Last Terrace Beer (And a Tear or Two): One last beer on the terrace. The spider seems friendly now. Maybe I'll miss this place. Maybe I won't. Maybe I'm just drunk.
Day 4: Farewell, Baarlo, You Quirky Place
- 8:00 AM - The Great Packing Debacle: Can't find my phone charger. Again. Packed. Found the charger. Panic.
- 9:00 AM - Final Breakfast of Hope: Last bit of cheese. Last coffee. Gotta go. This is it.
- 10:00 AM - Departure (With a Touch of Nostalgia & a Heart Full of Cheese): Driving back to the airport. Saying Goodbye. The Netherlands, you beautiful, confusing, cheese-filled paradise, I'll be back. Possibly. Eventually. Maybe.
- I'm home! Back in the real world.
Post-Trip Reflections:
- The Verdict? Baarlo was… well, it was something. A mix of quiet beauty and existential angst. The cycling was a challenge (mostly for the other cyclists). The cheese? Divine. The terrace? Almost worth the price of admission. Would I go back? Maybe. If they promised to stock the fridge with beer. And keep the geese at bay.
- The lingering question: I still don't know what my life's purpose is. But hey, at least I have some good memories (and a whole LOT of cheese) to show for it.
- Next Trip: Where to? Maybe I should stay at home next time.
Disclaimer: This itinerary is based on my own (slightly chaotic) experiences and may not be suitable for those seeking a perfectly organized holiday. Please pack extra patience, a good sense of humor, and a strong appreciation for cheese. And maybe a spare passport. Just in case.
